Friday was my first full day in DC. To start things off, I went to the place I'm staying to check-in and move some belongings to my room. It's across from the Hart Building where a majority of senators' offices are located. The closest metro station is Union Station. The US Capital is within walking distance as are the Smithsonian Museums. After unloading my belongings and getting a tour of my place, which, let me add, has an excellent menu (meals are included in the rental fee), a small gym, elegant grand piano situated near a lovely fireplace. antique teensy lending library, and lush, green outdoor patio area. I'm truly satisfied with living here.
Since the Smithsonian Museums are close by, I walked over to the Smithonsian Museums and went to the Air and Space Museum, the Natural History Museum, and, my favorite, the National History Museum. I might be off on the exact names of the museums. The jewel of the National History Museum was the First Ladies clothing exhibit. My heart stopped pitter-pattering when I saw Grace Coolidge's wardrobe. I need her clothes for the now because someone could transport them into the present with their own panache. I'm talking flapper dresses, feather, art deco jewelry. For one ballroom event, she went decked out in a one-of-a-kind flapper dress. Black, silver, feathers, shapeless cut, and short hemline to show off a a little above-the-knee action. It made me want to do the Charleston. My second favorite clothing collection was Mamie Eisenhower's closet of sophistication with a little punch to set the whole ensemble off. I couldn't believe I adored her clothes so much. There was this red gown that was on fire. It was her inaugural dress! My third favorite was Nancy Reagan. She seemed to be attracted to one-shouldered grecian styles. I thought I would be goo goo ga ga over Jacqueline Kennedy's clothing collection, but, eh, didn't do too much for me.
I could go on about the clothes but I'll stop hoping you haven't stopped reading my blog. But indulge me this, I'll be returning to do some more oogling of the clothing exhibit. And I do plan on posting pictures. I can't now because I don't have my Internet connection set-up yet and am using the community computer.
That wrapped up the first day after adding in some walking to do further exploring of side streets of the main thoroughfares.
